This morning I was driving my girlfriend to work and the check engine light came on. Took it to the auto parts store to get it scanned and it gave me a code of "P0440 Evaporative Emissions System". I texted "ChaCha" and asked them how to fix the problem. They answered back and said "Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back. This should fix the problem". To me it seems like that fix wouldn't work but I was wondering if that's true? If not, how do I fix the problem? Volvo . How to Calculate Crawl SpeedCrawl speed of a vehicle is how slowly your vehicle will creep along at a particular RPM value in a particular gear. Determine it by using the gear ratio values for your vehicle's transmission, which you can find by using a simple web utility that produces the crawl speed for your car or truck. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need First gear ratio Low range gear ratio Differential gears Step by Step : 1 Select the "Gear Ratio Calculator" Resource at the bottom of the page. 2 Scroll down to the "Crawl Speed at Given RPM" chart. 3 Select the RPM value you wish to determine the crawl speed for. Input the gear ratios for your vehicle. 4 Click "Calculate" to determine the crawl speed for your car or truck. ResourcesGrimmJeeper: Gears
Volvo . How to Find the Gear Ratio for a 2005 Chevy TruckThe Chevy truck model of 2005 was the Chevrolet Silverado, also known as the GMC Sierra or the Chevrolet Cheyenne. To determine the gear ratio on your 2005 Chevy truck requires counting the number of gear teeth on both the larger, idler gear and also on the smaller gear, or pinion. From there it's just a simple math equation to find your Chevy truck gear ratio. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Step by Step : 1 Count the number of teeth on the idler gear. The idler gear is on the camshaft above the pinion and is the largest of the gears. Let's say, for example, that the idler gear has 20 teeth. 2 Count the number of teeth on the pinion. The pinion is below the idler gear, on the crankshaft, and is the smaller of the gears. The pinion should not be confused with the balance shaft, located to the left of the pinion and with less defined teeth. Let's say that the pinion has 10 teeth. 3 Divide the number of idler gear teeth over the number of pinion teeth. 20/10 is 2. 4 Take this number and put it over 1. The gear ratio in the example, then, is 2/1, which means the pinion gear has to turn 2 times for every rotation made by the idler gear. Seeing these bubbles is easiest if you're using the hose-in-the-jar method, but you can also see them without it. 7. Before your friend releases the brake pedal, tighten the bleeder screw. If you don't, air is sucked back into the brake lines when the pedal is released. 8. Tell your friend to release the pedal, and listen for "Up." Then repeat the whole loosening and tightening sequence again and again until no more air bubbles come out with the fluid. 9. Open your master cylinder and add more brake fluid to the "Full" Volvo . How old do you have to be to buy a car and register it in Rhode Island?
12 * line. If you neglect to do so, you run the risk of draining all the fluid out of the master cylinder and drawing air into the lines from the top. Now, that isn't fatal — it simply means that you have to go back and bleed your master cylinder until you suck the air out of that end of the system — but who needs the extra work? If you goof and have to bleed the master cylinder, it's the same deal as bleeding your brakes (friend and all). Just bleed it at the point where the brake lines attach to the cylinder, or at the master cylinder bleeder nozzle, if you have one (see Figure 18-16). 10. Repeat these steps with each brake until the air is out of each brake line, remembering to add brake fluid to the master cylinder after you bleed each brake. 11. Volvo . How do you adjust the valves on a 1983 Nissan 280ZX?
* After you finish the job and bring the brake fluid level in the master cylinder back to "Full" for the last time, drive the vehicle around the block. The brake pedal should no longer feel spongy when you depress it. If it does, check the master cylinder again to be sure that it's full and try bleeding the brakes one more time (this situation isn't unusual, and it doesn't take as long as it sounds). If you know that no air is left in the lines and the brakes still don't feel right, you may need a new master cylinder. You should definitely consider installing it yourself — at an auto class. All it involves is disconnecting the old master cylinder (a bolt or two and the hoses leading to the brake lines), removing it without spilling brake fluid on anything painted, installing the new one, filling it with brake fluid, and bleeding it. If the job seems like too much of a hassle, have a professional do the work. You shouldn't have to pay for much labor, and if you choose a brake shop wisely, the whole deal shouldn't cost too much. Whatever you do, just be sure that, when the job is finished, they (or you) bleed the brakes and the master cylinder to get all the air out of the lines. .Chapter 18: Being a Buddy to Your Brakes and Bearings !? (\2 Figure 18-16: Bleeding a master cylinder: If you have a bleeder nozzle, use the hose and jar method (A). If not, bleed the cylinder at the brake line connections (B). Back in the 1970s, I had Tweety Bird's master cylinder replaced for about $60. (It would cost much more now.) Later, I helped a friend replace a master cylinder with a rebuilt one. The rebuilt master cylinder cost about half of what I'd paid for a new one, and there were no labor charges (naturally). What are your time and trouble worth to you?
